An Ekiti High Court has sentenced one Alonge Ajayi to death by hanging after he was convicted of armed robbery.
The presiding judge, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, who pronounced the judgement on Thursday ruled that the 22 year old ran foul of Section 402 of the Ekiti State Criminal Law 2012.
According to the Guardian, the case’s charge sheet states that Ajayi was part of a three-man gang that robbed three worshippers who were returning from church in Ikire-Ekiti on October 30, 2016. His other two accomplices had lost their lives during a gun battle with the police.
The victims, while recounting their ordeal with the robbers in court, testified that the gang followed them into their premises and pointed guns at them. They revealed that a sum of N100,000 was stolen from them along with other valuables.
Challenging the convict’s not guilty plea to the charge on February, 27, 2018, the former Attorney General, Justice Kolapo Kolade, who led the prosecution, brought forward four witnesses and tendered exhibits consisting two guns, five live cartridges, phones, a Bajaj motorcycle, Indian hemp and the written statement of the accused.
In his judgement, Justice Ogunmoye ruled, “The prosecutor has proved his case beyond all reasonable doubt. The accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging until he is dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”
