June 12 is significant in so many ways and one of them is the remembrance of the freest and fairest presidential elections in Nigeria and the demise of the acclaimed winner of the election, a Yoruba man, in person of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola. General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida who was then the head of state the evil genius at that time. In his own wisdom and in an attempt to pacify the Yorubas, Major General Muhammadu Buhari formally acknowledged Chief M. K. O Abiola as the winner of the elections, conferred on him the highest honour of the GCFR – Grand Commander of the Federal Republic and declared June 12 as democracy day.
There is no gainsaying the fact that as June 12 is of national significance being democracy day is also of great importance to the Yorubas who have been on the receiving end in matters of repression, subjugation and injustices. June 12 2021, being a day set aside for creation of awareness about the self-determination initiative of the Yoruba people of Nigeria is therefore not an accident of sort but a divine coincidence. This is not the beginning or the end of the rallies as it has held in several Yoruba states with huge success and perfect peace. The successes recorded could not have been without the support of the governors of those progressive states and to this end, wisdom demands that the Lagos Mega Rally should not be an exception in terms of security of lives of the participants and their property thereof.
On a final note, we believe strongly that the participants will comport themselves well as they have always done and our amiable governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu should see this as a God-given opportunity to correct the error of the past in relation to the #EndSars protesters and the #LekkiMassacre.
